Hoffman Estates police are warning of a potential scam involving someone calling residents from a phone number that appears the same or similar to that of the police department. Anyone who receives such a call should ask the caller for his or her name and badge number. Any legitimate officer would provide that information upon request, police said. If you're still unsure about the call, ask the person if you could call back. Do not ask for a phone number, but instead call the police department at (847) 781-2800.
